Bed bugs travel in luggage, not on people. Ten minutes at the door can save you a full treatment later.
Unpack away from the bedroom
Open cases on a hard floor — a bathroom or balcony — rather than on the bed. Bed bugs cannot climb smooth surfaces easily, and a hard floor makes anything that falls out visible.
What to look for
Check the seams and zips of your luggage for small dark specks, shed skins or live insects roughly the size of an apple seed. Wash travel clothing on the hottest cycle the fabric allows and tumble dry — heat is what kills them, not detergent.
If you find one, act immediately
A single fertilised female can start an infestation. Do not move mattresses or furniture between rooms, which spreads them, and book a professional inspection — bed bug treatment needs to reach every life stage, including eggs.
